How to tell if a phone call from the bank is real or a scam

Ask the Expert Edition
Here’s Germantown Community President Gurdeep Chahal with tips for spotting scam phone calls.
Q: How can I tell if a phone call from the bank is real or a scam?
At WaterStone Bank, your security always comes first. Unfortunately, scammers are getting more sophisticated, and it’s not always easy to tell a fraudulent call from a legitimate one. Here are a few simple rules that can help protect you:
1. We will NEVER ask for sensitive information.
A real banker will not ask for your digital banking login, account numbers, or Social Security number over the phone.
2. Don’t rely on caller ID.
Fraudsters can “spoof” or disguise their phone number to make it look like it’s coming from WaterStone Bank.
3. Notice the caller’s behavior.
Urgent threats like “Act now, or your account will be closed!” are red flags. A WaterStone Bank employee will answer your questions calmly, and will never pressure you, rush you, or threaten consequences.
4. Trust your instincts.
If something feels off, especially if you’re being asked to transfer money, buy gift cards, or share codes, end the conversation immediately. Do not share personal or financial details.
5. When in doubt, hang up.
