City of West Allis road reconstruction may affect travel routes.
West National Avenue is undergoing a road reconstruction project over the next two years by the City of West Allis. During this time, West National Avenue between the I-41/I-894 interchange and Highway 100 will undergo major reconstruction to improve roadway safety, traffic flow, utilities, bike lanes, and pedestrian access. Construction will occur in phases and is expected to continue through 2027.
Construction Updates (as of 8/17/26)
Construction will continue the week of August 17th. WisDOT has closed westbound traffic from West Lincoln Avenue to S. 102nd Street and has reduced eastbound traffic to one lane. Underground utilities will be replaced under the I-894 freeway, followed by pavement replacement.
Beginning late Saturday, August 1:
- The southbound and northbound entrance ramps to I-41/I-894/US 45 from eastbound National Avenue are scheduled to reopen.
- The northbound exit ramp from I-41/I-894/US 45 to eastbound National Avenue is scheduled to reopen.
- The southbound exit ramp from I-41/I-894/US 45 to National Avenue remains closed.
- Westbound National Avenue remains closed long-term between Lincoln and Cleveland avenues for reconstruction.
- Westbound Cleveland Avenue remains closed between National Avenue and the Target entrance until mid-August for storm sewer replacement. The Target entrance has been opened to traffic.
Detours:
- Motorists traveling westbound on National Avenue are encouraged to use Lincoln Avenue and 108th Street (WIS 100) to get around the closure.
- Motorists traveling southbound on I-41/I-894/US 45 are encouraged to use the exit ramps at Oklahoma, Lincoln and Greenfield avenues to get around the closure.
- Motorists traveling westbound on Cleveland Avenue are encouraged to use 92nd Street, Lincoln Avenue and 108th Street (WIS 100) to get around the closure.
The West Allis–National branch remains open.
